Welcome to Dark Forest

Hello. NyameDev here.  Not really sure how to write devlogs for public consumption so  I guess this is the space where I can learn how to do that. For the record, I am 100% just going to treat this space as a Dev Diary blog, since I want to personally document my progress on this project. Dark Forest is not meant to be a commercial project, so expect most information poster here to be a lot more informal than my other documentation within the itch portfolio I've created. I've been technically working on this project for a year now, but it has been very sporadic, as this is a personal project and my IRL commitments takes up most of my free time.

Here's a link to the current dev video playlist on YouTube, where I will be adding visual updates to pair with the text updates here.

Currently the team includes:

-Myself

-A Writer

-Two Composers

Gameplay / Progression Update

We've got some basic gameplay set up and I am currently implementing the main story cutscenes into one of the hub areas called the Den. I still haven't entirely figured out how combat is going to work, due to my unfamiliarity with old-school gameboy conventions. I played GBA, but mostly grew up on the Nintendo DS since I am apparently one of those Gen Z youngins my adaption to the GB/GBC is more of a curiosity and a love for the roguelike format rather than nostalgia for the hardware.

Notably, dungeon generation is about 85% complete, and the rest has already been planned out. I think there's still a scene transition bug for some of the dungeon load-ins right now, but I hope to address that before the new year. I have a feeling that I will eventually need to find an artist willing to work on the project because my background tileset design is only passable at best.

Closing Notes

Lastly, I want to just make a quick note that I made a subreddit for the game so people who don't lurk on itch might happen upon my prototype more easily. The subreddit is r/darkforestgb. Current Population: Me.
